Of the Sea-Elves, who ““sailed in their swift ships on the waters of the Bay of Elvenhome, or walked in the waves upon the shore with their hair gleaming in the light beyond the hill. Many jewels the Ñoldor gave them, opals and diamonds and pale crystals, which they strewed upon the shores and scattered in the pools; [...] and many pearls they won for themselves from the sea, and their halls were of pearl, and of pearl were the mansions of Olwë at Alqualondë, the Haven of the Swans, lit with many lamps.”
— The Silmarillion, J. R. R. Tolkien
This necklace was inspired deeply by visions of calm, quiet beaches with the gentle surf lapping against the shore, treasures brought in by the sea, and the silvery driftwood along the water’s edge.
It is made of repurposed/recycled/reclaimed materials, true to its beachcomber’s spirit; many of the magical-feeling treasures that hang from the hand-made howlite, quartz and brass beaded chain were found or once had a life as another piece of jewelry.
The charms that adorn this special piece are a large polished aquamarine, iridescent presses and cut glass in the shape of leaves, a blue-flash misty grey labradorite bead, and a focal piece of silver-finished copper: sculpted branches with leaves.
This kind of work (the linked beads, also referred to as “rosary chain”) is very labor intensive, and each link was made by me, by hand, beading and then bending and linking each stainless steel eye pin with pliers.
Please be aware that this necklace is as such rather delicate—please take care, it can be broken if pulled or caught.
